Meet the Team: Jennifer Yoon, LPC-Associate
What ages do you work with?
I work with children, teenagers, and adults of all ages.
Who else do you enjoy and feel confident working with?
I enjoy working with couples and families. Being a veteran and a military spouse has given me an opportunity to understand and navigate the unique obstacles military families face. I have also spent a lot of time working with mood disorders and clients living with trauma.
Your approaches and how you help:
I have a holistic approach to therapy. I believe there is not any one thing that will be life changing. It is important to take a step back and look at how various things affect your life (people, experiences, activities, hobbies). Counseling is offered and adjusted based on the needs of each client. Sessions can be task oriented for specific goals or more existential for deeper processing. With each approach there is potential for growth and learning.
My theoretical approach is founded in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) , more specifically, (REBT) Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. This modality also offers some great tools to get to work right away and further allows an individual to tap in to and challenge the deeply rooted belief systems that are impacting their life. I am also trained in EMDR Therapy. My clients are always a priority, so I am willing & able to incorporate other modalities and techniques to serve them.
What can a client expect if they work with you?
My clients can expect a therapeutic relationship that is built on trust, honesty and compassion. I work alongside my clients and really focus on an individual’s strengths. I also appreciate structure and accountability. That being said, my clients should come prepared to engage, learn, and work through new exercises and techniques. I will challenge my clients, but I am always rooting for them to succeed. Lasting change is what I am after.
What do you like about being a counselor?
It may sound cliché, but I enjoy being able to help and serve others. I also enjoy meeting new people. I have had the privilege to meet and work with some great people (peers and clients alike.)
If you could meet one author who would it be and why?
This is a tricky one. I am not an avid reader. Most of the books I have read were assigned to me ☺ But if I have to choose, I will say The Apostle Paul. I am in awe of his transformation. His hope and endurance is a testament to what good counsel has to offer.
Unique & fun facts about you:
I am crafty and creative by nature. I am pretty resourceful and can make pretty much any craft project look presentable. Unfortunately, I am useless when it comes to home decor. I know my limits ;)
